categorising mental disorders



DSM = the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, by the American Psychiatric Association, it provides standard criteria for classifying mental disorders, the most current version is the DSM-5 which holds 157 disorders

Major categories

neurodevelopmental disorders, e.g. intellectual disabilities

Ocd + related disorders, e.g. trichotillomania 

Trauma + stress related disorders, e.g. PTSD

Somatic symptom disorders, e.g. conversion disorder

Feeding/eating disorders, e.g. Anorexia

Impulse control disorders, e.g. Pyromania

Substance use and addictions, e.g. Gambling disorder
